What is a cambelt?
The cambelt is often referred to as a camshaft drive belt or timing belt and it is a reinforced, toothed rubber belt used in the majority of vehicles today. It is propelled by the engine crankshaft and drives the camshaft, which in turn operates the engine valves.

Where is the cambelt?
The cambelt is located at the front of the engine underneath a protective cover, and is behind the more obvious drive belts such as the fan belt and alternator belt.

Why does it need replacing?
The cambelt carries a very high load in the engine and, as with any rubber component of the vehicle; it can wear with age and with use. Also other environmental conditions play part, such as dust and stop/start driving conditions.

What will happen if it is not replaced on time?
Failure to duly replace the cambelt at the manufacturer’s recommended intervals can cause extensive and expensive damage to your vehicle. If the cambelt is not replaced it can break or the drive teeth can be stripped. If this happens the camshaft in the engine stops rotating, leaving some valves protruding into the cylinders. The crankshaft continues to rotate and can push the pistons into the valves and bend them. This causes major engine damage.

When should it be replaced?
Most car manufacturers recommend replacement of the timing belt at a predetermined time or mileage and strongly recommend that replacement occurs on or before the recommended intervals, whichever occurs first.

The belt also should be replaced prior to the manufacturer’s stated limits if it has been damaged or contaminated by an outside influence, fluids or foreign matter.

If the vehicle is operated in a harsh environment or susceptible to heavy infiltration of dust, sand or salt for example, then the belt’s integrity and condition should be periodically inspected and replaced if required.

The belt also should be replaced if for any reason it has been removed for a mechanical intervention.

Remember, replacement of the belt is only a fraction of the cost of repairing damage caused should the belt break.

When it comes to safety, no part of your vehicle is more important than the brakes. They should be inspected at least once a year to determine the condition of the hydraulic system and operating hardware. While the entire braking system requires attention, the friction materials – the pads, shoes, rotors and drums – require constant attention because they wear down each time you apply your brakes.

How can I tell when my brakes need servicing?

The brake pedal can be depressed nearly to the floor.
You hear a squealing or other unusual noise when you apply the brakes. Some brands of brake pads have a built-in device that produces a high-pitched squeal when the brake pads are wearing thin.
The car pulls to one side when you apply the brakes.
You feel a grinding or bumpy sensation as you come to a stop.
In general, if there is something about your brakes that is making you uncomfortable, you should have them inspected.

ABS Braking Systems
Eagle Autos are also experts in servicing the computer-controlled components of the anti-lock braking systems (ABS) that are common on today’s vehicles.

All of the parts we install are guaranteed to meet or exceed manufacturer’s standards. If you wish, we’ll return your old brake parts to you.

This service, like all services performed at Eagle Autos, is advised based on manufacturer’s recommendations, or as needed as determined by our inspection and based on industry standards.

The exhaust system is one of the most hard working components on your vehicle. It is constantly in use whilst the engine is running. An exhaust system on most vehicles usually comprises of four sections: Manifold, Front Downpipe, Centre Section, and Rear silencer box

A defective exhaust will mean the vehicle fails the MOT test. It also causes excessive noise; thereby rendering the vehicle illegal which could lead to a fixed penalty fine. All vehicles registered after 1993 a catalytic converter is fitted. The most common section to become defective is the rear silencer as moisture gathers inside the box and attacks the metal. Corrosion from the inside results in hole, which causes the exhaust to blow.

Catalytic Converters
‘How long should a catalytic converter last? It’s not unusual for catalysts to last 10 years, though actual life depends on mileage and engine tune. 50,000 miles is perhaps a more reasonable benchmark, and most owners can expect to replace the catalytic converter once during the life of the vehicle. If failure occurs early, it’s important that the reason for failure is identified and the cause rectified before fitting a new CAT, otherwise the replacement can be expected to fail prematurely too.
Eagle Autos will find the cause of failure

Modern car exhaust systems are fitted with a catalytic converter to reduce harmful emissions of fuel hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. The catalytic converter converts the hot fuel combustion gases into water vapour and the less harmful gases: Nitrogen, Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide.

How a Car Clutch Works with Normal Manual Driving
A car clutch is engaged/disengaged using the left most “clutch” pedal.
The clutch pedal is depressed to disengage the engine from the gearbox and drive train while changing gears. Once the gear is selected, the clutch pedal is released and the engine is once-again linked via the drive train
The clutch operation can be actuated by:
A Hydraulic Clutch
Depressing the clutch pedal increases pressure in a hydraulic piston coupled to the clutch pedal. The increased pressure is transferred to a secondary piston that operates a lever to engage-disengage the clutch plates
A Mechanical Linkage
The clutch pedal is connected directly to the clutch assembly via a mechanical linkage such as cable or chain.
An Electronic Clutch – Clutch by Wire
Sensors detect the position of the clutch pedal electronically and interpret the position using an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) that computes the best way to operate the clutch based upon information relayed from other sensors indicating driving speed, engine speed and so on. The ECU relays information to a servo unit to actuate clutch operation

Part Worn Tyres? No Thank you: READ ON

‘Part worn’ tyres are those which have been used previously – in other words they are ‘second-hand’ tyres however, part worn tyres usually have 50% or less of their original tread (legal minimum is 2mm) and may still have a few thousand miles more motoring in them. The essential attraction for many motorists is of course the price.
Eagle Autos your first choice for top quality part worn tyres. We always have a large selection of secondhand tyres including Avon, Michellin, Continental, Goodyear and Pirelli. Our vast range of used tyres are probably amongst the cheapest tyres available in the area.

We’ve been getting excellent reviews from loyal and new customers for years. It’s why people use us again and again.
