Watch out, if you buy used tyres

Watch Out with Cheap Part Worn Tyres

20 April 2015, 13:17

When it comes to buying cheap part worn tyres you have to be very careful. Follow this short checklist and your safety will be ensured.

  • Firstly, be sure to check the tread of the tyre. With deeper tread clearing more water from the road, your chances of aquaplaning reduce significantly. Aquaplaning occurs when the water building up between the tyre and tarmac causes car brakes and steering to cease functioning. Part worn tyres will have reduced tread so be sure to check when buying them.
  • Secondly, check the carcass. Consisting of steel wires and bonded fabric on a rubber casing, the carcass can quite often get damaged by potholes and punctures. To spot carcass damage, simply observe the tread for bubbles or uneven and lifted areas.

  • Thirdly, observe the sidewall. Providing extra suspension, sidewalls can often be examined for damage by looking at the area of the wheel that often gets pinched up against the kerb. Any deformations are a clear warning that it should not be used.
  • Fourthly, examine the bead of the tyre. Simply put, the bead is a ring of steel wire fixed into the sidewall and can be damaged by removing the tyre from the rim. Run your hand along the outside and inside of the bead while visually observing it for damage. This can save you experiencing your tyre popping off of the rim mid-drive.
  • Last but not least, regardless of how experienced you may be, make sure to get your tyres checked by a professional mechanic. This way if something goes wrong, you have a garage warranty that covers tyre faults.
